1) Acne:

Acne is one of the most common skin disorders in the world. It generally occurs when dead skin cells and oil block the pores of the skin. In its common form, “acne vulgaris” (or pimples), this clogging results in the appearance of red and swollen blemishes in the skin. These inflammations occur mainly on the face, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. There are other forms of acne that aren’t that mild. These can appear as – blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, papules or cysts.

Blackheads- These are caused by the hardening of oils in the skin pores due to the excess oil produced by sebaceous glands (the skin’s oil producing glands). The tip of the clogged pores, that is exposed to the air, turns black (due to oxidation) resulting in the formation of blackheads.

Whiteheads- Whiteheads are white raised spots that show up around the cheekbone, nose, or where the skin is fine. The formation of whiteheads is very similar to that of blackheads except that these occur where skin is delicate and the clogged grease does not get exposed to air. Therefore, there is no darkening of the tips (due to oxidation).

Pustules, Papules- Pustules are small pus-filled inflammations on the skin surface. These commonly occur on face, shoulder and the back. Papules are deeper inflammatory lesions that are raised and solid. In comparison to pustules, they take longer to heal and are known to result in scarring.

Cysts- Cysts are thicker, yellow pus-like inflammations. Quite often, papular or nodular acne results in the formation of a cyst. These inflammations may occur one at a time, or they maybe more than one over the common acne areas – face, neck, back, chest and shoulders.

There are treatments available for each form of acne. But, since the severity of the condition varies by individual, you are advised to consult a dermatologist to determine the best course of action.

The remaining 4 skin disorders Eczema, Psoriasis, Rosacea and Skin Cancer will be discussed in a separate article.

By: Mike Singh

About the Author:

Skin care is something that we can agree is important to how we look and feel. Choosing the correct skin care is important. Is herbal skin care the answer? Let’s take a look.

Skin care is not a topic of recent times; it has been in practice since

ancient times, when herbal skin care was probably the only way to take

care of skin. However, skin care has transformed in a big way. Herbal

skin care routines have been replaced by synthetic/chemical-based skin

care routines. The herbal skin care recipes which once used to be common

place are not so popular today (and even unknown to a large population).

This transformation from herbal skin care to synthetic, can probably be

attributed to two things – our laziness (or just the fast pace of lives)

and the commercialisation of skin care.

Even herbal skin care products

have been commercialised. These commercial herbal skin care products

have to be mixed with preservatives in order to increase their shelf-life,

hence making them less effective than the fresh ones made at home. However,

it seems that things are changing fast and more people are now opting for

natural and herbal skin care routines. But still, none want to make them

at home and hence the commercial market of herbal skin care products is

on the rise.

So what are these herbs or herbal skin care mechanisms?

Aloe vera, which is an extract from Aloe plant, is one of the best examples

of herbal skin care product. Freshly extracted aloe vera is a natural

hydrant that helps in soothing skin. It also helps in healing cuts and

treating sun burns.

A number of herbs are known to possess cleansing properties. Dandelion,

chamomile, lime flowers and rosemary herbs, are a few examples of such

cleansers. Their herbal skin care properties get invoked when they are

combined with other herbs like tea.

Antiseptics are another important part of Herbal skin care. Lavender,

marigold, thyme and fennel are good examples of herbs that are known to

possess antiseptic properties. Lavender water and rose water also form

good toners.

Tea plays an important part in herbal skin care. Tea extracts are used

for treatment of skin that has been damaged by UV radiation.

Oils prepared from herbal extracts present another means of herbal skin

care. Tea tree oil, Lavender oil, borage oil and primrose oil are some

popular oils used in herbal skin care. Some fruit oils (e.g. extracts

from fruits like banana, apple and melon) find use in shower gels (as a

hydrating mix)

Homeopathic treatments and aromatherapies also come under the umbrella

of herbal skin care remedies.

Herbal skin care is good not only for the routine nourishing of skin but

also for treatment of skin disorders like eczema and psorasis. Most herbal

skin care products don’t have any side effects (the most important reason

for preferring them over synthetic products) Moreover, herbal skin care

products can be easily made at home, hence making them even more attractive.

So, herbal skin care is the way to go. However, this does not mean that

you totally discard the synthetic products. Some people go to the extent

of debating with their dermatologist, if he/she suggests a synthetic product.

You should accept the fact that some skin orders might need usage of clinically

proven non-herbal skin care products.

And now please visit the XtendSkinCare website listed below for updated information about Facial Skin Care.

By: Margaret Bell

About the Author:

Sleep disorders can have many causes and may be of many types; Insomnia is a familiar amongst the many types of sleeping disorders. Medication often proves to have worst side effects and the body builds a resistance or a dependency to the commonly used sleep drugs as well. Whether the causes to these sleep problems are deeply psychological or related to more common reasons such as seasonal affective disorder, light therapy, especially blue light and dawn simulation, have been highly effective in providing relief to patients and helping them sleep when they need and want to.

Sleep Disorders

SAD, Insomnia, Circadian rhythm sleep disorder and Narcolepsy are the most common disorders that affect the sleeping patterns of people on a regular basis all over the world. These disorders are deeply related to the biological clock of the human body, and light treatment uses this clock by affecting its reactions through the use of bright light stimuli. This is done in order to ‘set’ this clock, allowing patients to sleep proper hours and at timings which cause the least disruption of normal daily hours for work and family life. The therapy is not used to cure any possible root cause (such as psychological causes – even though light therapy has had success in helping treat psychological disorders such as SAD and bipolar disorder), it generally elicits and reinforces desired behavior while offsetting the undesirable behavior by resetting the biological clock.

How light therapy affects Sleep cycles

Our body clock must be in sync with our natural inclination (natural cycle) in order to sleep well. This clock can be offset by a number of causes; such as depression, SAD (winter depression etc), illness or irregular sleeping hours. This lack of sleep and the offsetting of the natural clock can then lead to deeper effects such as increased depression, exhaustion and lack of energy and lack of sleep (insomnia).

Bright Light; Clinical tests have shown that the pineal gland in the eye is affected by the presence of any bright light. This gland acts to regulate our natural biological clock (the body clock), which, in turn is connected to our sleeping habits (the natural sleeping patterns our body adheres to come from the body clock), mood, sexual drive and even our eating habits.

Blue Light; The retinal receptor in the eye is the receptor that interprets and responds to the wavelength of the light entering the eye. Tests indicate that his receptor responds more to particular wavelengths of light, including blue light (405 to 425 nm). This receptor sends signals to the part of the brain (hypothalamus) which controls sleep, hormonal function and our emotion levels (moods.)

Therapy; Light therapy can be planned around the type of disorder. The schedule and frequency / duration of the treatment depends upon the type of disorder, how it affects the sleeping patterns (how much sleep is being attained and at what hours?) and what the possible causes are. The therapy can be scheduled to provide the stimulus using a light source (such as those found at clinics or the portable ones which can be used at home) at appropriate times in order to technically reset the biological clock (with the treatment continued over a set period of time) until the subject becomes accustomed to a desirable sleeping routine. The better sleep will in turn induce better moods and remove insomnia and lack of energy.

References:

Wikipedia[dot]com

En[dot]wikipedia[dot]org/wiki/Light_therapy

www[dot]naturebright[dot]com/

By: Allen Anderson

About the Author:

Dermatographia (aka “skin writing”) is a rare, auto-immune skin condition which affects about five percent of the human population. Individuals impacted by this condition have hypersensitive skin and even minor injuries, rubbing, or scratching can cause raised, red lines and ridges to appear on the affected area. Other symptoms include itching, swelling, inflammation, and hive-like welts on the skin. Hives form when skin cells known as “mast cells” become sensitive to physical stimulation like scratching and release histamines. This then causes blood to leak out of blood vessels under the skin. In 2008, an artist named Ariana Page Russell used this condition as basis for art by drawing designs and patterns on it as though it were a canvas.

Dermatographia is not a serious condition and symptoms do not normally last very long. However, scratching and rubbing can cause irritation and discomfort. Triggers include rubbing against clothing and bedsheets, exposure to cold, heat, and sunlight, and/or applying pressure to the skin in some way. It may also be caused by stress or emotion. In most cases, symptoms disappear between 30 minutes to two hours following the irritation but in some cases they may last hours or even days. This may cause sufferers to experience pain and a burning sensation.

The causes of dermatographia are unknown but some believe it to be an allergic reaction of some kind. It may also have a genetic basis. Moreover, other skin disorders like dry skin or dermatitis increases the risk of dermatographia. Dermatographia has not been conclusively tied to gender or any particular ethnicity; however, it seems to be more prevalent in young adults between the ages of 20 and 30.

Treatment

The most common means of treating dermatographia is through anti-histamines and steroids to relieve symptoms. Anti-histamines block the release of histamines by the immune system. They are not, however, guaranteed to cure hives and can also have side effects. Herbal and/or other natural remedies may also be used to treat dermatographia. Self-care measures such as drinking plenty of water, using moisturizers to keep the skin hydrated, and simply not scratching one’s skin should also be followed to the extent possible.

By: Safiur Rahman

About the Author:

Throughout history fair, white skin has been a desirable physical attribute for a variety of societal and cultural reasons. In many Asian cultures, the look of porcelain white skin was considered a sign of good breeding or association with royalty or other elite cultural sects, particularly in women. Those members of the working classes often bore the look of laborers with skin tone that were darkened by exposure to the sun and soiled from daily work. Even in Renaissance Europe many classical paintings depict women who, aside from looking well fed and well clothed, had very fair complexions. Kabuki Theater in Japan features all male casts and the actors whose faces where adorned with white makeup, especially when portraying womens characters.

The desire to conform to this standard has driven many people on a search to whiten darker skin pigments, even in some African cultures where dark skin pigmentation was thought to be an adaptation to environmental conditions especially the heat of the equatorial sun. The modern practice of skin whitening has been the cause of some controversy as dark skin pigmented individuals seek to shed their dark skin color in an attempt to gain cultural acceptance in predominantly white European societies. Differences in opinion on the perceived benefits of skin whitening have even arisen in India where women have been encouraged to lighten their skin in order to look more Western and possibly more attractive to potential romantic suitors. It is somewhat ironic that in the United States and Europe, many people light skinned people seek to darken their skin color by tanning, either in the sun, using a tanning bed or employing spray-on tanning products.

Not all skin lightening is done to create a particular look for the sake of fashion. Many people suffer from medical conditions that cause uneven skin pigmentations that can have a very negative impact on ones self image and skin lightening products can have help to even out the skin tone and greatly enhance self image and self confidence. Skin pigment disorders can occur when too little or too much of a compound known as melanin. The more melanin that is present in the skins cells the darker skin pigment tend to be.

For as long as there has been a desire to lighten the skin there have been potions and treatments used to achieve the goal of lighter skin. Homemade solutions and potions with roots in folklore have existed for many, many years. Some of these solutions were benign and fairly harmless, while some could very hazardous. In response to the need for reliable products, the cosmetics market has seen an increase in the number, quality and price of such products. Some products have been criticized for containing levels of mercury that are potentially hazardous.

Sunscreen has been used to prevent the darkening of the skin that occurs through exposure to the sun. On the other extreme is the use of products that actually lighten or even whiten skin pigmentations. A common goal of most skin whitening products is to block or greatly reduce the amount of melanin produced in the skin. Many topically applied creams and lotions contain concentrations of hydroquinone sometimes in combination with other ingredients that may enhance the lightening effects. Cortizone is often the secondary ingrediant since contrizone acts as an anti-inflammatory. There are numerous compounds that are used as alternatives to hydroquinone with varying results.

Medical lasers have been used to treat medically recognized skin pigmentation disorders thought there is debate about the overall effectiveness of this treatment depending on the degree of pigmentation.

By: Mitch Endick

About the Author:

There is no dearth of skin care creams and lotions in the market. Name an ailment, and you will find hundreds of skin care creams, lotions and other products for it. As a result of ongoing research and due to ever increasing demand, the number of skin care products seems to be on the increase. Skin care lotions and skin care creams are the most popular forms in which these products are available, and there always seems to be a debate on which form is better?

Well, there is no definitive answer to this. It seems more like a matter of personal choice. However, greasy creams are surely less popular as compared to the non-greasy (or less greasy) ones. Since the application of skin care creams is easier, they seem to be preferred (over lotions) in cases where the skin care product is not to be removed immediately after application. So, skin care creams seem more popular as moisturisers than as cleansers or toners. For toners, lotions seem to be preferred over skin care creams. There are some skin care creams that acts as toners too, but generally the toners are available in liquid form only. For cleansing, lotions and skin care creams are equally popular; however, the tilt seems more towards lotions.

Creams are known to be most effective in keeping skin moist; hence, the most popular form of skin care creams is moisturisers. Due to the same reason, a lot of people tend to associate skin care creams with dry and sensitive skin. Though it is true to a certain extent, skin care creams are not used only for dry skin, they are also used for making products for oily skin e.g. vitamin A creams and sulphur creams that help reduce the rate of sebum production.

Skin care creams are also used for products that cater to skin disorders especially for disorders that require the application of product over a small localised area. This is again due to the fact that skin care creams are easier to apply (without wastage) on the affected area. However, in cases where skin needs to be washed using a medicine/product, lotion is a better choice. Mostly, the manufacturers too realize this fact, making it easier for you to choose between a lotion and a skin care cream

Eye-creams and anti-ageing creams are other examples where skin care cream is preferred over its lotion counterpart.

Whatever your choice be (cream or lotion), knowing how to use it effectively, is more important than anything else.

By: Nicholas Tan

About the Author:

With the rise in skin cancers and the desire for perfect bodies, more people are having mole removal surgery. The reason most people do this is for purely cosmetic reasons. This can mean paying large sums of money for relatively straightforward procedures. The cost varies greatly from place to place and has varying degrees of success.

Get Rid of Mole, Warts or Skin Tags in Just 3 Days

A dermatologist will not normally advise having a non-cancerous mole removed as the procedure can be expensive and may leave scarring. However, more private skin care clinics are happy to suggest various surgical procedures at the merest hint of any physical or emotional embarrassment caused by your mole. This is highly profitable for them and can result in patients paying the full cost of the procedure as it is not normally covered by medical insurance.

A simple way to avoid being ripped off for having a mole removed is to never disclose your level of personal discomfort. Instead, simply seek advice on whether it is malignant or benign and ask for general advice or how you would remove it if you wanted to have it removed. Never indicate that is it causing you any emotional distress as that can result in surgery being suggested as the only solution.

If you have any moles you want removed it is advisable to speak to a dermatologist to ensure it is a benign growth. If it is benign and you want to remove it for cosmetic reasons, then expect to pay the full cost if you opt for surgery. There are plenty of natural mole removal remedies available that will not cost as much as the surgical procedures and will not have as many drawbacks.

Before deciding on any procedure it may be better to check out the alternative natural remedies that have been successful time and time again. Many remedies can be made from common items found in your kitchen and can be even more effective than surgery as they do not cause pain or scarring.

By: Mr. Pom

About the Author:

Beautiful skin is a result of a beauty skin care regime, and this is a process that can be cultivated as a daily habit. A part of the daily routine can include the elements of a beauty skin care plan. Radiant, youthful looking skin is possible each and every day with the right combination of products, a healthy lifestyle, a steady diet rich in fresh and natural food, and plenty of rest. Skin cells are able to restore and refresh themselves when they are well taken care of. Skin maintenance is an ongoing process that can enhance the skin’s ability to produce fresh skin cells on a regular basis. When this is damaged severely or resistance is lowered, it may lead to premature aging, wrinkles, and dull complexions.

The Beauty Skin Care Regime

A beauty skin care regime will be comprised of a few key essentials and steps in a consistent program. These will include regular:

•	Cleansing

•	Toning

•	Buffing

•	Moisturizing

•	Exfoliation

•	Clear makeup application

Cleansers

Cleansing is an essential part of any skin care program, and can occur twice daily. Cleansers can vary from foaming to lotion or cream cleansers, and will depend largely on skin type and condition. Mediated cleansers are often used for many skin disorders or after intensive treatments. Common ingredients for potent and effective cleansers include lemon or aloe bases, infusions of Vitamin C, lavender, and rose, and menthol-based cleansers for deeper cleaning.

Toners

Toning helps to refresh and revitalize the skin, and will remove any buildup or toxins that the cleanser may not have removed or picked up. Toners can vary in strength, and may be alcohol-based. These will take away any moisture, so finding the right cleanser for skin type is essential. Dryer skin may require less toner, and there are many toners available for sensitive skin types that will not strip away moisture from the top layer so severely. Other toners may help increase moisture with vitamin-rich ingredients.

Buffers

Skin buffers can remove dead skin cells lightly, in between exfoliating treatments. Buffing agents may include a washcloth, firm sponge, or facial buff block. These can help smooth out an uneven complexion over time, and will remove dirt and grime at the same time. Buffers can be harsh on sensitive skin, so light buffing may be a better option for light and sensitive skin-types.

Moisturizers

Moisturizing is an essential part of beauty skin care, and the right moisturizer for each skin type will ensure that skin looks vibrant, healthy, and attractive on a regular basis. Dry skin can lead to skin discomfort, irritation, and a variety of skin disorders. Applying the right moisturizers can help skin stay soft, smooth, and supple on a regular basis, as well as help to restore skin from any external damage or climate changes.

Exfoliation

Weekly or biweekly exfoliation is an excellent way to enhance and revitalize skin naturally. Exfoliation not only removes dirt and debris from the skin’s surface, but can also smooth out any lines and refresh the top layer of the skin by boosting circulation. Common exfoliating agents include oatmeal, seed granules, and some types of sand and mud that do not clog pores. After exfoliation, the pores are opened so a generous application of moisturizer is recommended.

Clean Makeup

Wearing makeup on a regular basis has many benefits when it is applied properly. Makeup can provide a protective barrier between the skin and the environment, and the right makeup for the skin will depend on skin type, climate, and general skin sensitivities. Chemical-based makeup will generally clog pores and leave skin with an unhealthy shine. Natural and organic makeup lines can enhance skin, and even nourish it further with fresh ingredients, vitamins, and minerals. Applying makeup with clean applicators is essential to prevent bacteria and infection from building up in the skin’s pores, and leaving it with a healthy glow instead.

Beauty Skin Care and Diet

Apart from the external factors and influences for maintaining healthy skin, diet and internal balance can play a vital role. Hormonal changes can play a significant role in how the skin reacts and responds to various elements. Any imbalances will show up on the skin in the form of redness, dry skin, blotchy skin, or a dull complexion. In addition, the diet can play a vital role in how the skin appears. Diets that are rich in wholesome, natural foods will help the cells in the body grow and maintain themselves. Water is essential to all of the functions of the body, and can maintain the moisture level of natural skin. A diet that includes a variety of foods is essential for overall health. Specific foods and vitamins that affect the skin include:

•	Fish oil, fatty fish, and Omega 3 supplements for essential fatty acids that can give skin a youthful appearance

•	Vitamin C for balanced skin. This is found in many citrus fruits and as a supplement in juice

•	Natural nuts and seeds for Vitamin B, Vitamin K, and natural fats

•	Leafy green vegetables and freshly squeezed juice for antioxidant properties

By: Dave Mcevoy

About the Author:

Sunburn is a burn on the skin and a type of skin disorder. It results from overexposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun. The consequence of this burn is inflammation of the skin. Injury can start within 30 minutes of exposure. The skin consists of several different layers and chemicals that work to protect those layers. One of the most important chemicals in the body is called “Melanin”. This substance is responsible for ensuring that the pigment within the skin is properly protected.

If you have sunburn, then it most certainly means that your skin has become dehydrated. You will have to replenish the water content. Drink lots of water (even though it makes you urinate a lot), and also stick to a liquid diet if possible for one whole day. Eat a lot of fruits that are high in water content such as watermelons, oranges, sweet limes and cantaloupes. If you have blisters form on your sunburnt skin you may be tempted to burst them in order to relieve the pressure and the pain.

Though most sunburns are mild problems that correct themselves in a few days, constantly getting your skin sunburned can increase the chances of skin cancer. Therefore, it is not good to expose your skin to the sun more than it is necessary.

The home remedies for sunburn are not only helpful in treating the sunburn, but also in avoiding it to quite an extent. The best way to protect oneself from sunburn is intake of lot of fluids in order to prevent dehydration, and also replace the loss of water due to sunburn.

One of the biggest dangers of tanning outdoors is that sometimes you can expose your skin to too much ultraviolet light. This can cause sunburn which can lead to certain types of skin cancer. When tanning outdoors, it is important to use sunscreen before lying in the sun to catch some rays. When tanning outside, you are not able to control the amount of UV rays that hit your body from the sun. Unfortunately, we cannot control the sun.

Sun burns can be excruciating and it is important to protect them from friction and pressure. Loose fitted clothing is suggested.

Sunglasses and hats are important. Your facial skin is extremely sensitive and it would be harmful for you to experience a second burn. This high exposure to sun and its damaging effects can cause premature aging to show its signs at an early age.

Sunburns are very common and the industry has adapted well, offering many over-the-counter remedies. Aloe Vera gels are a common soothing remedy. These products can diminish pain and lessen swelling.

Other natural skin care products are made with a recommended and effective cream made from the byproduct of snails. This cream is especially effective in the healing process as it initiates skin replenishment and regeneration. While sunburn and the appearance of aging are two complications of sun exposure, it is important to understand that there are many benefits that you can gain from the light that the sun emits.

By: altruist

About the Author:
